This collection of poems and images has been published to coincide with the special display A Still Life: Paul Coldwell in Dialogue with Giorgio Morandi, on show at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art between 6 October and 19 December 2021. It develops the long-term relationship the artist has had with both the work of Giorgio Morandi and the museum itself.
All the works were created in London between 2020 and 2021 when the population of the UK – in common with that of many other countries around the world – was compelled to live under ‘lockdown’ conditions, which limited social contact, travel and working arrangements.
There are parallels between lockdown and the self-imposed restrictions of Morandi’s life.
The artist was born in Bologna where he lived and worked throughout his career. He rarely travelled, his studio-cum-bedroom in the apartment he shared with his sisters providing the setting for his intimate still lifes.
A Still Life is presented in a box measuring 32 x 22 x 2 cm and contains 10 previously unpublished poems, each printed on a separate folded sheet, as well as 13 colour images of sculptures printed on card. The boxed set comes in an edition of 100 copies, each signed and numbered, and its design enables viewers to establish their own configurations between text and image.
