Renowned novelist and journalist Enrico Franceschini will be joined by journalist, writer and professor Federico Varese for a fascinating introduction to his latest book, La Mossa Giusta, published by Baldini+Castoldi in 2024.

Odessa, Ucraina, 1918. Mentre infuria la guerra civile fra rossi e bianchi, sette uomini sono in piedi contro un muro, davanti al plotone di esecuzione. Un attimo prima che i soldati bolscevichi aprano il fuoco, un ufficiale nota un nome nell’elenco dei condannati a morte e chiede se per caso è il famoso giocatore di scacchi. L’uomo risponde di sì. L’ufficiale non è convinto. "Facciamo una partita", gli propone. "Se perdi significa che menti e verrai fucilato. Se vinci sei davvero il campione di scacchi e ti lasceremo andare." Il condannato è Ossip Bernstein, ebreo ucraino, brillante avvocato d’affari a Mosca e uno dei più forti scacchisti del mondo...

Enrico Franceschini (Bologna, 1956) is a correspondent for la Repubblica in New York, Washington, Moscow, Jerusalem and London. Among his many works of fiction and non-fiction is the noir trilogy Bassa marea, Ferragosto and Un'estate a Borgomarina. For Baldini+Castoldi he published La fine dell'impero. Ultimo viaggio in URSS (2021) and Come girare il mondo gratis. Un giornalista con la valigia (2023).

Federico Varese is Professor of Criminology and Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. He has previously been an editor of the journal Global Crime and has written for The New York Times and The Times. He is a contributor to the Times Literary Supplement and la Repubblica.

His latest essay 'Russia in quattro criminali' is published by the Einaudi publishing house with which he has previously published Mafie in movimento (Einaudi 2011) and Vita di maria (Einaudi 2017).

Professor Federico Varese won the most prestigious award of the American Association of Criminology in 2024, named after Thorsten Sellin, Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck, in recognition of his 'exceptional contribution' to the studies of this discipline.
